The Meaning of Marketable Securities

Marketable securities are securities that are expected to be converted into cash within a year. Marketable securities appear on the balance sheet as current assets.

Marketable securities may include, for instance, corporate and government bonds, treasuries, and common stock, as well as derivative instruments: options, swaps, etc.

For examples of ways that marketable securities are valued and reported in bookkeeping and financial accounting, see the encyclopedia entry lower of cost or market.
